Hiroshima is proud of their local professional baseball team “Hiroshima Toyo Carp,” which is one of six teams consist of Japan Central League.
Its name “carp” comes from three reasons. Local “Ota River” is known as a habitat for carp. Hiroshima Castle is called “Carp Castle. Carp was symbolised as restoration of the city after atomic bomb damage because carp is powerful fish to leap a waterfall. Along with their team color. the team is called with their nick names “Carp” or “Akaheru-gundan (red helmet corps).
The team used to use Hiroshima Municipal Stadium which was built in 1957. In 2009, a domed stadium was completed as a new home for the team. It’s about 5-10 minutes walk from Hiroshima Station.
The stadium is officially owned by Hiroshima City, which gave the naming right for the stadium Mazda Motor Corporation which is also based on Hiroshima. Mazda named the new stadium “MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium Hiroshima.” The stadium is designed for visitors to enjoy watching games such as sheets for wheelchairs, sunshade sheets, BBQ/Party area for groups or families. The most exciting facility is the front sheets in the infield bleachers are 90cm lower than the ground. You can watch, hear and feel every single movement of players so closely.
The team holds various events for supporters and local residents through a year. What is amazing is the team allow anyone to use their trademark or logo if they use them to support the team.
The team has been well known as one of the best beloved teams by locals. The supporters are described as loyal and enthusiastic. Not only first base side at home games, but also third base side at away games are always covered with red by supporters.

let’s follow the story of “Hiroshima Toyo Carp”. Sixteen managers have been taken direction of Hiroshima Carp. One of the managers was Ryohe Hasegawa, referred in the story of the team history. Koji Yamamoto whose uniform number, “8”, became a retired number had took direction two times. Also, he had taken direction of the Japan national baseball team. Some members such as Kenta Maeda, Takeru Imamura, and Yoshihiro Maru have been elected as members of the Japan national baseball team. In addition, Hiroshima Toyo Carp became the champion in Japan Series three times. The last time when the team became the champion was 1984. In 2015, many people like baseball fans, newspersons and sports reporters thought that the team had a capacity to win the championship. This is because Hiroki Kuroda who came back to Japan from the major leagues joined Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He used to be in the team before he went to the major leagues. The last team he belonged to in the major leagues was New York Yankees, which is one of the most famous baseball teams in the world. This team tried to keep him in the team. However, he had manly spirit, and wanted Hiroshima Toyo Carp to become the champion in Japan Series. Therefore, he became a member of the team again. He and other members did their best, but they couldn’t become the champion. They will try to become the champion next year.
